ElevenLabs Alternatives 2026: The 6 Best Still Running
Most lists of ElevenLabs alternatives published this year include at least one tool you cannot sign up for. PlayHT is the usual culprit. Meta acquired the team in July 2025, the API went dark that same month, and the platform shut down permanently on December 31, 2025 with every account, saved file and voice clone deleted. The domain no longer resolves.
It still appears on pages of ElevenLabs alternatives updated in the past month, described in the present tense, free tier and all.
So the first job of any page about ElevenLabs alternatives is unglamorous: confirm the thing still exists. The second is to stop ranking tools on voice quality, which is not why people leave. Nobody abandons ElevenLabs because the voices sound bad. They leave because the credit system surprised them, because cloning costs more than they budgeted, or because the work belongs somewhere else entirely.
This page sorts seven options by the reason you’re looking, not by a leaderboard. Every price carries the date we checked it, and where we could not verify a figure ourselves we say so instead of repeating someone else’s number.

ElevenLabs alternatives: the short version
- Leaving over cloning cost? Check before you switch. Murf, the most-recommended replacement, puts voice cloning on Enterprise only.
- Leaving because voice is one step in a bigger edit? Descript, from $16 a seat on annual billing. The voice work sits inside the timeline.
- Publishing into the EU? Article 50 of the AI Act has applied since August 2, 2026. Machine-readable marking is now a selection criterion, not a nice-to-have.
- Building voice agents rather than content? You want a latency-first API, and most creator tools sold as ElevenLabs alternatives are the wrong category.
- Still the honest answer for many: stay. ElevenLabs remains the quality benchmark, and its rollover rule is more generous than the tools people switch to.
Three checks to run on any list of ElevenLabs alternatives, including this one
Does it still exist? PlayHT is the obvious failure, and it isn’t the only acqui-hire in this market. Meta absorbed the roughly 35-person PlayAI team into its Superintelligence Labs division; Bloomberg reported the team joining Meta in July 2025. The product was collateral. Anyone still recommending it in September 2026 has copied a list rather than checked one.
Does it do the thing you’re leaving for? The commonest reason people hunt for ElevenLabs alternatives is the cost of voice cloning. Murf appears near the top of almost every list, and Murf gates cloning behind Enterprise. For the exact reader who arrived at that list, it is not an alternative at any price they can see.
Can it legally publish into your market? This one is new. Article 50 of the EU AI Act has applied since August 2, 2026, and it requires that outputs of systems generating synthetic audio be marked in a machine-readable format and detectable as artificially generated. Systems already on the market before that date get until December 2, 2026 for the marking obligation under the AI Omnibus agreement. The European Commission’s own FAQ sets out both dates.
Almost every page of ElevenLabs alternatives ranking today was written before August. They sort on voice quality, latency and price, which were the right criteria in March. If you publish AI voice to European audiences, provenance marking moved from a feature to a compliance question three months ago, and the grace period closes in December.
Several links below are affiliate links and we earn a commission if you subscribe. Two of the seven ElevenLabs alternatives here pay us nothing and we’ve recommended them anyway where they fit. Prices come from vendor pricing pages on the date shown, and figures we could not verify ourselves are labeled as reported rather than checked.
The seven ElevenLabs alternatives worth your time
| Tool | Leave for it when | Entry price | Cloning included | Price checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Murf | Narration for slides and courses | $19/mo annual, $29 monthly | No, Enterprise only | 4 Sep 2026 |
| Descript | Voice is one step in an edit | $16/seat annual, $24 monthly | Yes, on paid tiers | 4 Sep 2026 |
| Resemble AI | You publish into the EU | Not verified this update | Yes | — |
| LOVO | Cloning on a small budget | Not verified this update | Yes, on paid tiers | — |
| Fish Audio | Volume at low cost, or self-hosting | Reported ~$5.50/mo, Mar 2026 | Yes | Reported only |
| Cartesia | Real-time voice agents | Reported from $4/mo, Mar 2026 | Yes, 3-second sample | Reported only |
| Speechify | You’re listening, not producing | Not verified this update | Limited | — |
Blank entries are deliberate. We verified three pricing pages for this round of ElevenLabs alternatives and won’t publish a number we haven’t opened ourselves.
Our level of use here: researched. Pricing and feature claims come from vendor documentation and, for the shutdown, from contemporaneous reporting. We have not run paid accounts on all seven and we’d rather say that than imply a test bench we don’t have.
1. Murf: narration for slides, courses and presentations
Murf gets named first among ElevenLabs alternatives more often than anything else, and for a specific job it deserves that. Native integrations with Canva, PowerPoint and Google Slides mean the narration lives where the deck lives. For an instructional designer producing course modules, that removes more friction than any voice-quality difference.
Creator runs $29 a month billed monthly, dropping to $19 on annual. Business is $99 monthly or $66 annual. The free plan gives roughly ten minutes total, with no downloads and no commercial rights, so treat it as a showroom.
Two things to weigh against ElevenLabs. Murf’s generation minutes do not roll over between cycles, where ElevenLabs banks unused credits up to twice your quota. And voice cloning sits on Enterprise, which has no public price. If cloning is the reason you’re here, this is the wrong door.
2. Descript: when the voice is one step in a bigger edit
Descript sits oddly in a list of ElevenLabs alternatives because it edits audio and video by editing a transcript. Delete a word from the text and the audio goes with it. Its Overdub feature regenerates a cloned voice so you can fix a fluffed line by typing the correction.
For podcasters and video editors this is a different proposition from a voice platform. You aren’t buying speech synthesis with editing bolted on. Pricing runs Free, Hobbyist at $16 a seat annual or $24 monthly, Creator at $24 annual or $35 monthly, and Business at $50 annual or $65 monthly. The free tier caps at 60 media minutes and watermarks exports.
Descript bills per person, not per project. Three people on Creator annual is $72 a month, not $24. Teams comparing it against a single ElevenLabs subscription routinely miss this and end up surprised at renewal.
Where it loses against ElevenLabs, and against most ElevenLabs alternatives built purely for voice: cloning fidelity and language coverage both trail a dedicated platform. Check Descript’s plans.

3. Resemble AI: the compliance answer
Resemble builds a watermark into audio it generates, designed around provenance rather than added afterward. Among mainstream ElevenLabs alternatives it is the one positioned explicitly at the marking obligation described above. It also offers zero-shot multilingual cloning, so a voice trained once generates across languages without retraining per language.
Whether you need this depends entirely on where your audio lands. A YouTube channel aimed at a US audience has a different exposure from an agency shipping dubbed corporate video to European clients, and no list of ElevenLabs alternatives can settle that for you. We have not verified Resemble’s current pricing for this update and won’t quote a figure from memory.
4. LOVO: cloning without the Enterprise gate
LOVO earns its slot among these ElevenLabs alternatives on one narrow point: cloning appears on its paid plans rather than being reserved for a sales call. For someone leaving over price while still needing a cloned voice, that closes the gap Murf leaves open.
Expect a step down in expressiveness against Eleven v3. If your material is marketing narration or e-learning rather than character work, that step may cost you nothing you’d notice. See LOVO.
5 and 6. Fish Audio and Cartesia, the two that pay us nothing
Neither runs an affiliate program we’re part of, and both belong on any serious list of ElevenLabs alternatives.
Fish Audio is the cost play at volume, with an open-source route if you have a GPU and the patience to run it. Third-party reporting in March 2026 put its paid entry around $5.50 a month and API pricing near $15 per million characters. We have not verified those, and the open-source license terms are worth reading closely before commercial deployment.
Cartesia is the latency play, cloning from about three seconds of audio and built for conversation rather than narration. If you’re constructing a voice agent, the creator tools on this page are the wrong category and Cartesia is nearer the right one. Its free plan was reported as personal use only, which rules it out for client work.
7. Speechify: a different job entirely
Speechify turns documents, PDFs and web pages into audio you listen to. It lands on lists of ElevenLabs alternatives because both produce speech, which is roughly like shelving a camera next to a projector.
It’s here because a real slice of people searching for ElevenLabs alternatives want to consume text as audio rather than produce voiceover, and handing them a production tool wastes their money. See Speechify.
When staying put is the right answer
Worth saying plainly on a page about ElevenLabs alternatives that earns money when you leave. ElevenLabs prices commercial rights at $6, which undercuts several tools on this list. Unused credits bank up to twice your quota, where Murf’s minutes expire. Cloning starts at $22 rather than a sales call.
Pull your last four months of usage rather than your busiest month. Because credits roll over, plenty of people searching ElevenLabs alternatives are solving a spike the rollover already absorbed. If that’s you, the cheapest move is no move, and we earn nothing from it.
Good reasons to switch
- Your work is an edit, not a voiceover, and the tools should match
- You publish synthetic audio into the EU and need provenance marking
- You’re building conversational agents where latency decides everything
- Cloning on a small budget, which LOVO covers and Murf doesn’t
Weak reasons to switch
- One month of overage that rollover would have covered
- Chasing voice quality, where ElevenLabs is still the benchmark
- A cheaper headline price that gates the feature you came for
- A recommendation from a list that hasn’t been checked since spring
Picking ElevenLabs alternatives by reason, not by ranking
Match the tool to why you’re leaving and the shortlist collapses to one or two names.
Course and slide narration
Murf. The Canva and Slides integrations save more time than any voice difference. Accept that cloning is out of reach.
Podcast and video production
Descript. Voice work belongs in the timeline. Budget per seat, not per subscription.
Dubbing for European clients
Resemble. Provenance marking is now a compliance question with a December deadline attached.
Cloning on a tight budget
LOVO. Cloning on paid tiers rather than behind a sales call, with less expressive range.
High volume or self-hosted
Fish Audio. Cheapest at scale and open-source if you have the hardware. Read the license.
Voice agents and phone systems
Cartesia. Latency-first, three-second cloning. Creator tools are the wrong category here.
Questions about ElevenLabs alternatives
Is PlayHT still a viable ElevenLabs alternative?
No. Meta acquired the PlayAI team in July 2025, the API went offline that month, and the platform closed permanently on December 31, 2025. Accounts, saved audio and voice clones were deleted with no export path, and the play.ht domain no longer resolves. There is no successor product. If a list published in 2026 still recommends it, treat everything else on that list with the same suspicion.
Which alternative is cheapest for voice cloning?
Among the ElevenLabs alternatives here, LOVO puts cloning on its paid tiers and Fish Audio is cheapest at volume, though we haven’t verified either price for this update. The honest comparison point is ElevenLabs itself: professional cloning starts on the $22 Creator plan. Murf, despite topping most lists, reserves cloning for Enterprise with no published rate, so it isn’t in this comparison at all.
Do I need to worry about the EU AI Act for AI voiceovers?
If your audio reaches EU audiences, yes. Article 50 has applied since August 2, 2026 and requires synthetic audio outputs to be marked in a machine-readable format and detectable as artificially generated. Systems already on the market before that date have until December 2, 2026 for the marking obligation. Providers carry most of the burden, but knowing which platform complies is now part of choosing one.
Can I move my voice clone from one platform to another?
Not directly. Clones are model artefacts rather than files, so switching means re-uploading your original training audio and rebuilding on the new platform. This is why keeping your source recordings matters more than people realize. PlayHT users who never kept theirs lost the voice permanently when the service deleted its data at the end of 2025.
Are the free ElevenLabs alternatives good enough for client work?
Rarely, and usually for licensing reasons rather than quality. Murf’s free plan blocks downloads and commercial use. ElevenLabs’ free tier carries no commercial license. Cartesia’s was reported as personal use only. Open-source models can be excellent, but licenses vary sharply and some explicitly forbid commercial deployment, so read the terms before you ship anything a client pays for.
Should I switch at all?
Often not, and we earn nothing by saying so. Check your last four months of usage before deciding, because ElevenLabs banks unused credits up to twice your quota and a single busy month may already have been absorbed. Switch when the job has genuinely changed shape, such as moving into video editing or voice agents. Don’t switch to chase a headline price that gates what you came for.
What to take away
- Check the tool exists before you check the price. PlayHT has been dead since December 2025 and still turns up in lists of ElevenLabs alternatives updated last month.
- Murf is not a cloning alternative. It’s the best pick for slide and course narration, and cloning sits on Enterprise.
- Descript is the answer when the job changed shape, not when the price did. Count seats before you compare.
- Provenance marking became a real criterion on August 2, 2026, and the grace period for existing systems ends on 2 December.
- Look at four months of usage before switching. Rollover means plenty of people shopping ElevenLabs alternatives don’t have the problem they think they have.
